About Barry Square
Barry Square is a residential neighborhood in Hartford, Connecticut, located in the southern part of the city. It is named after Father Michael Barry, whose church, St. Augustine, served as a community anchor in the neighborhood's early years.
The neighborhood is known for its 1920s architecture, including Colonial Revival single-family homes, multifamily buildings, and mid-rise apartment complexes. Most residents rent, with a wide range of housing options available across different price points.

Revitalization
In recent years Barry Square has been the focus of meaningful public investment. The City of Hartford completed a $3.3 million Franklin Avenue and Maple Avenue Streetscape Improvements Project in spring 2023, adding new sidewalks, ornamental streetlights, raised landscaped medians, designated bike lanes, decorative crosswalks, and bus shelters along two of the neighborhood's primary corridors. In 2025, the city and state allocated an additional $2 million for continued safety and streetscape improvements along Maple Avenue. The project includes public safety enhancements at the intersection of Freeman Street and South Street, new sidewalks, trees, decorative streetlights, and improvements to the entrance of nearby Goodwin Park.
